Devotional thoughts/historical background
This hymn is one of praise to Almighty God for the great things He has done, the greatest of which is the sending of His Son to die for the sins of His people. The original hymn was written in Norwegian and was subsequently translated into English. This is why some of the sentences are structured rather awkwardly. Interestingly this awkwardness disappears in Tamil.

Here are some scriptures that may have been in the mind of the hymn writer when he penned this hymn:

When the LORD restored the fortunes of Zion,
we were like those who dream.
Then our mouth was filled with laughter,
and our tongue with shouts of joy;
then they said among the nations,
“The LORD has done great things for them.”
The LORD has done great things for us;
we are glad. (Psalm 126:1-3)

And at the seventh time, when the priests had blown the trumpets, Joshua said to the people, “Shout, for the LORD has given you the city. . . ” So the people shouted, and the trumpets were blown. As soon as the people heard the sound of the trumpet, the people shouted a great shout, and the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they captured the city. (Joshua 6:16-20)
